WHAT IS PHLIER?

The Public Health Leadership Initiative for Emergency Response (PHLIER) program is conducted by the New Jersey Center for Public Health Preparedness at UMDNJ.  This eight-session leadership development program is designed for mid-career health officers and other public health professionals including REHS’s who aspire to become health department executives.

The goals of PHLIER are to foster the next generation of public health leaders, promote excellence in leadership, and explore responses to public heath emergencies.

PHLIER training is case study based and each session will focus on specific public health challenge including: Principles of Leadership, Design a Health Department, Public Health Law, Infectious Disease Epidemic, and Disaster Response. Working in groups, the PHLIER Fellows will be challenged to identify new and creative case solutions.  Expert presenters and panelists will be used to help the Fellows explore the cases and evaluate their presentations.  Site visits will enhance the immersive learning experience.

Fellows who apply the PHLIER class are selected by the  PHLIER Steering Committee, consisting for representatives from the NJ Health Officers Association, NJ Association of County Health Officers, NJ Environmental Health Association, NJ Department of Health and Senior Services and NJCPHP.  Applicants are selected to include a broad representation of current job titles, merit, various agency jurisdiction types, and different geographic locations throughout New Jersey.  The seminar series consists of seven monthly one-day seminars and a a two-day retreat.  There will be no fee for PHLIER training and Health Officer and REHS leadership credits will be applied for.

The NJCPHP goal is to offer future PHLIER programs to train at least 100 public health leadership professionals within the next 5 years.
